Broadway Debut at 76: A New Chapter for Phylicia Rashad
Phylicia Rashad, a legendary figure in American theater and television, is set to make her Broadway directorial debut at the age of 76. This milestone will be marked by her direction of Purpose, a gripping new play by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. The production is scheduled to open at the Helen Hayes Theater in New York City on February 25, 2025.
Purpose tells the story of the Jasper family, who are striving to become a significant force in Black American politics. The family faces numerous challenges on their path to influence. Their journey becomes even more complicated when the youngest son, Nazareth, brings home an unexpected guest. This surprising development forces the Jasper family to confront deep-seated issues related to their faith, legacy, and the cracks in their seemingly strong foundation.
A Return to Purpose: Rashad’s Directorial Journey
This isn’t Rashad’s first time directing Purpose. She initially directed the play when it was commissioned by Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago. The Chicago debut took place in March 2024, where it received glowing reviews. The production quickly became one of Steppenwolf’s highest-grossing shows in its nearly 50-year history. Due to its success, the show’s run was extended through April 2024.
Rashad’s passion for directing was evident during the Chicago run. Reflecting on her experience, she said, “I’ve been many places in my life and good places abound, and this is certainly one of them, and this is a good time.” The Broadway production of Purpose promises to bring the same intensity and emotional depth that captivated audiences in Chicago. However, the casting for the Broadway run has not yet been announced.
