Melba Wilson, a name synonymous with Harlem’s culinary excellence, has crafted an inspiring success story that extends far beyond her beloved neighborhood.
As the owner and founder of Melba’s restaurants, Wilson has turned her passion for food and community into a thriving business empire, becoming one of the most influential figures in New York City’s dining scene.
Wilson’s journey began in 2005 when she opened the first Melba’s in Harlem, driven by a desire to create a place where people could come together over great food.
Since then, her vision has blossomed into a legacy, with Melba’s expanding its footprint across the city and beyond.
In 2022, she opened Melba’s at Wollman Rink in Central Park, followed by another location at Newark’s Prudential Center in 2023. The expansion continues with Melba’s Grand Central slated to open in October 2024 and a second Newark site planned for 2025.

Reflecting on her journey, Wilson expressed amazement at how far she has come.
“If you had told me in 2004 that I would be the sole owner of four businesses, I would’ve said ‘No,’” she shared with theGrio. “I could have never even dreamed that all of this would have happened.”
But Wilson’s path to success wasn’t without its challenges. Starting with $312,000, she quickly realized the hurdles of being undercapitalized and the difficulty of hiring staff who shared her vision of hospitality and comfort. Yet, she persevered, guided by her belief in her mission and the community she serves.
“I knew I had to give it my all,” Wilson said. “Being a Black woman in Harlem’s restaurant scene meant that expectations were different, and the pressure was immense. But I wasn’t here to complain; I was here to succeed.”
Wilson’s commitment to excellence is evident in every aspect of her business. She has become known not just for her delicious food but for the atmosphere of warmth and community that defines Melba’s.
Her success is a testament to her resilience, hard work, and unwavering dedication to her craft.
Today, Melba Wilson stands as a beacon of success, not only as a restaurateur but as an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs everywhere.
Her story is a powerful reminder that with passion, perseverance, and a commitment to excellence, anything is possible.
