Farai Simoyi Leads Virgil Abloh Scholarship Fund to Empower Black Fashion Talent and Create a More Inclusive Industry

The Fashion Scholarship Fund has announced a new leader for the Virgil Abloh “Post Modern” Scholarship Fund and Equity program. Farai Simoyi, founder of Brooklyn-based retail store The Narativ House, will take the helm. This move promises to expand opportunities for Black talent in the fashion industry.

Visionary Leadership for the Virgil Abloh Scholarship Fund

Simoyi brings two decades of fashion industry experience to her new role. She’ll oversee the scholarship program and work to increase the number of awards given each year. Additionally, Simoyi will spearhead pilot programs supporting Black talent in fashion.

“Virgil Abloh was a visionary who ignited a generation,” Simoyi stated. She expressed commitment to carrying forward Abloh’s legacy of inclusivity and opportunity. Simoyi aims to empower underrepresented students and create a more equitable fashion industry.

From Zimbabwe to Brooklyn: Farai Simoyi’s Fashion Journey

Simoyi’s background uniquely positions her for this role. Originally from Zimbabwe, she’s spent 18 years designing for renowned brands and celebrities. Her client list includes Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Rachel Roy, and Nicki Minaj.

Beyond design, Simoyi has helped over 70 international brands enter the U.S. market. She’s also partnered with companies like W Hotels and OkayAfrica to develop inclusive partnerships. Her diverse experience reflects the scholarship fund’s mission of fostering diverse talent.

Expanding Opportunities in Fashion Education

Simoyi’s commitment to education aligns perfectly with the scholarship fund’s goals. In 2020, she became program director for fashion design at Thomas Jefferson University. There, she established the first-ever Diversity in Design course.

Shannon Abloh, speaking to WWD, highlighted plans to double the number of Virgil Abloh Scholars in 2025. She praised Simoyi’s hiring as a crucial step towards expanding the program’s impact and reach.

In 2017, Simoyi founded The Narativ House, a Brooklyn-based retail store. This venture showcases her dedication to uplifting emerging designers. The store also sells ethically sourced goods, reflecting Simoyi’s commitment to responsible fashion.
